A Blank Canvas: A brief consideration of Modern Design

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Modern Design was born at the turn of the 20th century. But as design does, this movement acquired from its predecessors, namely the Bauhaus and International styles. Bauhaus was an architectural school founded in 1918. The faculty and students of the school would develop a type of architecture that favored simplicity and the integration of technology. International Style became the term used once the ideas of the Bauhaus began to catch on around the world. Swiss architect, Le Corbusier and his idea of an open interior became the basis of International and eventually Modern design.

The philosophy of why the modern style was originated is open to a debate that will never be resolved. The advancements of the technological revolution in mid 19th century brought about innovations in technology and new building materials. Sleek and clean lines were easily presented with the glass, steel, and concrete that became highly available through the mass production of the 20th century. Some insist on the direct correlation with the eclectic artistic movement* of the time, Expressionism, Fauvism, and so forth. The idea of progress and the socio-political revolutions of the early 20th century were surely making an impact as well. Whatever the foundation of this Modern movement, we know that it was a time of inspiration and change, remarkable enough to endure through to the present.

Let us examine Modern Design as it stands today in its most prevailing form–the interior. Open any house magazine or journal from the last five years and I feel quite confident in saying most articles center around the modernising of the house. Whether it be color, accessaries, lighting, and so forth., designers today are constantly enquired as to what looks chic, and today, modern is chic. (more…)

3 Steps To Helping Your Asthmatic Child

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

The first and most crucial step to take is to decide to take control of your child’s asthma. Parents of asthmatic children suffer a range of contradictory feelings. Strongest is the natural concern for their child. Are you giving them the best treatment, or is there something you have not thought of or are unaware of? Then there are the doubts about being over or under protective. If they’ve non-asthmatic siblings do you treat all of your children the same? Perhaps there has some guilt that asthma may have been inherited and it’s your fault your child has the condition.

Let’s take charge of the situation and dispel this myth straight away. You have not willed it onto your child. It’s nobody’s fault or a judgement of some sort any more than an inherited ability that makes somebody more potential to be good at sports or singing. You can also take charge by educating yourself about the condition. Don’t waste time worrying if there are better treatments or medications for your child. Find out. Use the medical community, library and online. The best prescription is knowledge.

The next step is to be aware of your child’s health. One problem with having an ill child is their inability to clearly explain how they feel. An asthmatic child may not come to you in the middle of the night and mention difficulty breathing, or persistent coughing. Instead they may leave their condition to worsen until their lungs have expanded enough to start pressing on their stomach. At this point they may mention they feel sick. (more…)
